Working with your Documents in the Cloud just Got a Whole Lot Easier – Thanks To the folks at SyncDocs. — Don’t Miss this Black Friday Deal!!!
Update (October 2026)
I stopped using SyncDocs a good many years ago. Google’s own Drive for desktop app does the same job now, keeping a folder on your computer synced with Google Drive, so that’s what I use. If that’s what brought you here, grab the free Drive for desktop app from Google Drive.

Working with your Documents in the Cloud just Got a Whole
Lot Easier Thanks To the folks at Sync Docs.
Are you a fan of Google Docs? If your not familiar with Google docs, in short:
“Google Docs is a free, Web-based office suite, and data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. Google Docs combines the features of Word / text document creation and Spreadsheets with a presentation program incorporating technology designed by Tonic Systems. Data storage of files up to 1 GB total in size was introduced on January 13, 2011, documents created inside Google Docs do not count towards this quota.*”
Google Docs has grown and added many new features in recent years making it very very useful. It now allows you to upload any kind of file you have on your computer. One major limitation it has suffered is that it upload process is still a bit tedious and needs to be done via the web browser.
I have though Google Docs was an excellent tool for a long time. It offers many of the word processing features I need, including support for presentations and spreadsheets. However, if you wanted to work with a document off-line, such as in office, it was a pain to go back and we-upload the file.
I learned about a product called SyncDocs about a month ago. Syncdocs is a small program that you install in Windows (can be adapted to mac with use os WINE, but I have not tried it yet) and it automatically will upload a set folder to Google docs. It is very close to real time for uploads, I am sure that would vary if you had a slow connection or a slow computer.
Even for files that I am not going to edit such as video, I often put them into my sync docs folder so they get uploaded to Google Docs. Why? A couple reasons, first of all, it gets me an off side backup quickly. I do use a backup service also, but it never hurts to have an extra copy of a project you just spent half the day on. The next feature about Google docs I love is how easy it is to share. One click of the mouse and the entry of an email address and you can share an entire project folder with another person, a group of people or the public. It is very useful for any type of project where you need to collaborate with or get the approval of others on.
Symons is a deal at the normal price of $19.95 a year. However, I noticed for Black Friday (till 11/28/2011) it is on special for black Friday / cyber Monday for only $12.00 a year. I highly suggest picking up a copy.
Now Google docs only comes with 1GB of total storage and that doesn’t sound like a lot these days. Fortunately, expanding that storage costs a pittance. To grow that to 20GB of space a year will only set you back $5. 80GB is $20, 200GB is $50, 400GB is $100 a year. (Yes, those rates are for a full year). It is some of the lowest cost online storage you can buy, and just like the rest of Google, it is Tied 1 quality storage. It is much cheaper than services like DropBox if you compare the GB per GB cost. The big limitation with Google Docs and the storage space has been that there has not been a good easy way to access it, that is until SyncDocs came along.
One last note; the support folks at Sync Docs are Excellent; very very responsive. Just drop them a line if you need help, they also have a online forum and online documentation for assistance.
