Hostas in Pots and the Garden in Mid-May 2014
A few yard photos from 5/16/2014. I’ve been propagating hostas, and here are some of my divisions growing on nicely in their 4″ pots, getting established before they go into the ground.
I love the variegated varieties especially — that gold-and-green coloring is just gorgeous even on these young plants. It’s satisfying to grow them out from divisions and watch them fill in.

? When can you plant where you live?
I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
