The Yard in Mid-May 2016 — Hostas and Ferns

A look around the yard on May 15th, 2016. Everything was filling in fast — the hostas were pushing out their first big leaves, the ostrich ferns were coming up, and the shade garden was greening up.

This is one of my favorite times of year in the garden. Every few days there’s something new up, and the beds fill in fast. Here’s how things were looking.

? When can you plant where you live?

I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
