Hostas in Late May — Fresh Variegated Leaves Just Unfurling

The hostas were really coming into their own by May 20th. I’ve always liked the variegated varieties — the way the gold and blue-green play against each other on a single leaf, and each plant has its own look.

This time of year the leaves are still fresh and unblemished, fully unfurled but not yet chewed up by the season. The whole shade bed was filling in nicely. Hostas are about the most reliable plant you can grow around here, and ours just keep getting better year after year.

? When can you plant where you live?

I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
