A wildflower-lined dirt path winding through the woods at Wilderness Park in Neenah, Wisconsin

Wilderness Park Neenah

Wilderness Park is one of those tucked-away local spots that does not get a lot of attention. It sits just a block from the lake here in Neenah, and in early summer the woods really come alive.

There is one main trail that runs straight through the park, an easy five to ten minute stroll, and it is dog friendly. Off of that you will find several smaller, less formally carved-out paths where you can wander into the woods and walk along the edge of the marsh.

The wildlife is the best part. You will almost always see a deer in here, and often several at once. Now and then you will come across a turkey, and there are always songbirds, with the occasional pair of ducks cruising through the marsh.

One night I walked in there in the dark and heard the loudest noise I have ever heard an animal make. I still have no idea what it was, but I will admit I am a little more careful about going in when it is pitch black now.

It is an easy, peaceful walk, and a good reminder of how much natural beauty is right here in town if you go looking for it.

Have you been there? I'd love to hear your favorite spot.
