The Hostas at Their Peak — Front Yard Garden, July 2016

Every year the hostas get bigger, and by early July they’re looking great. The front yard bed on 7/6/2016 was as full as I’ve seen it — big overlapping leaves in all shades of green, some with creamy centers, others a solid deep green. They’ve been filling in over the years, and at this point the whole bed is packed.

I shot a quick video to show how lush it was. Hostas are about as easy as it gets — minimal work, good payoff every year.

? When can you plant where you live?

I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
