Signs of Spring — The Garden Comes Alive on April 4, 2017
Two weeks into April and the garden was already putting on a show. After the first green on March 20th, things really accelerated — by April 4th there was new growth everywhere you looked. The ajuga was spreading its little round leaves along the step edges, the catmint was building up into bushy clumps, and the bulbs were well on their way up.
It’s one of my favorite times of year to walk the garden and see what came back strong. Everything’s still a little rough around the edges, but it’s green and alive, and that’s what matters in early April.

? When can you plant where you live?
I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
