A Full Fall Day — Halloween Decor, October Skies, and a Dog in Costume

October 21st, 2017 was one of those fall days that packs a lot in. The best of it was a full rainbow that arced right over the south end of Congress Street here in Neenah, glowing against a pink sky with the neighborhood maples lit up orange underneath it. That is the kind of thing you pull the car over for.

The rest of the day was pure late-fall, Halloween-season Neenah. Vasco, who was thirteen that fall, wore his orange jack-o’-lantern sweater with the long-suffering patience of an old dog who was not the least bit impressed. The Indian corn heart wreath went up on the red wall the way it does every year, simple but always sharp. Felix, our gray tabby, was out patrolling the garden. We lost him this past fall, in 2025, so it is good to have him here in these pictures.

There is more of the season in the gallery too: the neighbor’s pampas grass gone to tall feathery plumes, cauliflower and mums from Jim’s Produce at the farmers market, the maples turning every shade of red and gold, and one more of those magenta sunsets glowing right down the middle of the street. Fall in the Fox Valley does not last long, so it is worth catching while it is here.
