First Signs of Spring 2018 — New Growth in the Garden on April 24th

After a long Wisconsin winter, it’s good to see those first green shoots pushing up through the dead leaves. These are from April 24th, 2018 — the start of spring in the garden, as far as I’m concerned.

If you look close you can see the mint waking up against the warm side of the house, clusters of bulbs and perennials sending up fresh blades, and new growth coming out of last year’s leaf litter. Not the showiest set of photos, but to a gardener at the end of winter, this is the good stuff.

? When can you plant where you live?

I built a free little tool for exactly this question — The Garden Almanac. Type in your ZIP code and it gives you your USDA hardiness zone, your average last and first frost dates, and a planting calendar tuned to your spot — when to start seeds, set out transplants, and sow. It runs right in your browser, no account needed. Find your frost dates & planting calendar →
