The Christmas Tree and the Train — A Family Tradition at My Parents’ House
No Christmas at my parents’ house would be complete without the tree and the train. Every year a big fresh tree goes up, and every year it disappears under what has to be decades’ worth of ornaments — glass figures, lights in every color, tinsel, and keepsakes that have been hung on these branches longer than I’ve been around.

And then, of course, there’s the train. A loop of track runs all the way around the base of the tree on the hardwood floor, the way it’s supposed to, ready to circle past the presents. With the cuckoo clock on the wall and the soft glow of a Tiffany lamp in the corner, it’s about as cozy as it gets.
I grabbed a quick video too, so you can see all those lights in motion. Merry Christmas, 2023.
