Voltage - a neon number-merge arcade game by Jamie Dolan

I Built a Neon Arcade Game Called Voltage: Free to Play and Share

I’ve got a new one to share. After finishing the backgammon game I caught the building bug, and this time I made something completely different: a fast, glowing little arcade game I’m calling Voltage. With the help of AI I built the whole thing from scratch, and it’s free to play right in your browser. No signup, no catch. Just open it and go.

Voltage gameplay - glowing number tiles merging on a neon grid
Voltage in action: drop the charged tiles, merge matching numbers, and chain the combos.

If you’ve ever played 2048, you’ll feel right at home, but Voltage adds a falling, Tetris-style twist. You drop charged tiles down a neon grid, and whenever two matching numbers touch, they merge into the next power up: two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and on it climbs. Clear a merge and the tiles above come tumbling down, often setting off a chain reaction, and the longer the cascade runs, the bigger your combo multiplier and your score.

There are special tiles to shake things up, too: a bomb that blows out everything around it, a lightning bolt that clears a whole column, and a wild tile that copies its strongest neighbor. And when you want more than a quick round, there’s a Daily Challenge (a fresh board everyone plays the same each day), a relaxed Zen mode with no game over, a two-minute Sprint, and a global leaderboard if you want to see how you stack up. You can even send a friend a challenge link that drops them onto the exact same board you played.

It runs great on a phone, and you can add it right to your home screen like a real app. Honestly, it’s the kind of thing I lose ten minutes to without meaning to, which I’m choosing to take as a good sign. Give it a try:

Like the backgammon game, this is something I’m still tinkering with and improving, so if you run into anything or have an idea, I’d love to hear it: leave a comment or use the contact form. Thanks, and have fun chasing that high score!

New to This Kind of Game? Here’s How to Play

It takes about ten seconds to learn and you really can’t mess it up: the game shows you everything as you go. But here’s the quick version:

  • The goal. Keep merging tiles into bigger numbers for as long as you can. The grid fills from the bottom up, and it’s game over when there’s no room left, so your whole job is to keep making merges and clearing space.
  • Dropping a tile. Aim left or right and let it fall. It lands in whatever column you choose and settles down to the bottom of the stack.
  • Merging. When a tile lands next to, or on top of, a matching number, the two combine into double the value. Line a few up and a single drop can trigger a whole cascade.
  • Combos. Every merge in one chain bumps your multiplier higher. Big cascades are where the huge scores come from, so it pays to set them up before you cash them in.
  • Special tiles. Keep an eye out for the bomb, the lightning bolt, and the wild tile. They’re perfect for digging yourself out of a tight spot when the stack starts creeping up.
  • Next-up and hold. You can see the next few tiles coming, and you can stash one in the hold slot to save it for the right moment.

That’s really all there is to it. The strategy (when to build up a big tile, when to fire off a combo, when to drop a bomb and reset) comes naturally the more you play. Jump in and see how high you can charge it up.
