The Dog-Years Translator: how old is your dog, really?

You already know the rule. Somebody’s dog has a birthday, someone does the math out loud — “so she’s seven, that’s like forty-nine in dog years” — and everyone nods. The trouble is that the “just multiply by seven” rule is almost completely made up. It’s tidy, it’s easy, and it’s wrong in a way that actually matters.

So I built a little thing that does it properly. It’s called The Dog-Years Translator, and it’s here:

Why ×7 is a little fib

Two things break the simple version.

The first is that dogs don’t age at a steady pace. They sprint through the early years — a one-year-old dog is much more like a teenager than a seven-year-old kid — and then the curve flattens out and they age more gently for a long stretch. A straight line can’t capture that. The real shape is a fast climb that levels off.

The second is size. A little dog and a giant dog do not age the same way at all. Small dogs tend to live long, slow lives; big and giant breeds pack their years in faster. A ten-year-old Chihuahua and a ten-year-old Great Dane are in completely different chapters of life, and any honest calculator has to know the difference.

What the Translator does instead

You tell it two things: how old your dog is, and roughly how big they are — small, medium, large, or giant — or you can pick from a list of 116 breeds and let it sort out the size for you. It runs that through a real, size-adjusted aging curve and gives you your dog’s true human-equivalent age, plus the life stage they’re actually in: puppy, young adult, prime, mature, senior.

I tried it on Akiva first, naturally. Watching the real number come up instead of the lazy one is weirdly touching — it’s a little more honest about where your friend actually is.

Gentle on purpose

One thing I was careful about: the wording never gets alarming. If your dog is getting up there, the Translator won’t hit you with anything scary or clinical. It just tells you the stage, warmly, and leaves the rest to you and your vet. Nobody needs a free web toy delivering bad news about their best friend.

When you’re done, there’s a printable certificate with your dog’s name and their real human age — good for the fridge, or for settling an argument at the family cookout.

And it’s free, instant, and private

The whole thing runs right in your browser. It’s free, there’s no sign-up, and nothing about your dog leaves your device — you type the age, it does the math on the spot. That’s it.

Go find out how old your dog really is:
