Pounce: a cozy new cat game where you’re the laser pointer
I have a soft spot for building little browser games, and lately I’ve been on a tear. But I kept coming back to one idea that wouldn’t leave me alone: I wanted to make the cutest, most heartwarming cat game I could: something with kittens, sunbeams, and not a single thing to feel stressed about.
So here it is. It’s called Pounce, and there’s one little twist that makes it different from anything else in the arcade.
You’re the red dot
You don’t play a cat in Pounce. You play the red laser dot, the most beloved (and most chaotic) cat toy ever invented. You wiggle it around with your mouse or your finger, and a cozy living room slowly fills with kittens who chase, skid, tumble, and pounce after it. Lead them on a merry chase and their little Joy meter climbs.

The twist: you have to let them win
Here’s the part I’m proud of. Every cat owner knows the guilty little secret of the laser pointer: if the cat never actually catches the dot, it gets frustrated and gives up. It’s no fun to chase something you can never have.
So in Pounce, you don’t win by being fast and untouchable. You win by being kind. The biggest rewards come from slowing down and letting a kitten genuinely catch the dot: the triumphant pounce, the burst of hearts, the happy little purr. Run them ragged and never let them win, and they’ll lose interest, flop down, and start grooming themselves while your Joy quietly drains away. Hold the dot dead still and they get bored of that too.
The sweet spot is playful arcs with the occasional generous pause, a tiny lesson (let the cat win) hidden inside a silly arcade game. And when a few kittens dogpile the dot at the same moment, you get a gleeful “Pile-up!” combo.
A whole room to play in
The latest update fills that cozy living room with things to actually do. Lead a kitten over to the cardboard box and let it catch the dot there, and it’ll dive in and pop right back out: if it fits, it sits. There’s a cat tree to scramble all the way up to the top perch, a crinkly tunnel to zoom through and shoot out the far end, and a laundry basket that tips over in a happy little explosion of socks. Catch a kitten on any of them for a bonus: a soft glow lights up the spot when the moment is just right.
Cozy, free, and yours to keep
I went warm and soft with this one instead of the usual neon: a wood floor, a soft rug, a sunbeam that drifts across the room as the afternoon goes on, eight different kinds of kitten (tabby, calico, tuxedo, a little siamese…), and a whole room of cat furniture (a cardboard box, a cat tree, a tunnel, a laundry basket) to romp through.
It’s completely free, there are no ads and no sign-up, and it plays in any browser on your phone or your computer. You can even add it to your home screen like an app: it’ll open full-screen and works offline, so it’s there waiting whenever you need ninety cozy seconds with some imaginary kittens.
Be kind to the kittens. 🐾
