Do Shih Tzus Shed? And Are They Hypoallergenic?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from people thinking about getting a Shih Tzu, usually because someone in the house has allergies. Here is the honest answer from someone who has lived with the breed for years, not a brochure.

Do Shih Tzus shed?

Here is the thing that surprises people: Shih Tzus have hair, not fur, much like we do. Because of that, they shed very little compared to most breeds. But “very little” is not “none.” They do lose hair, it is just that the loose strands tend to get caught in the long coat instead of dropping onto your couch. That is good news for your furniture and bad news for your dog’s coat, because that trapped hair is exactly what turns into mats and tangles if you do not stay on top of it.

So the real trade-off is this: you sweep up far less hair than you would with most dogs, but you sign up for regular brushing and grooming. A daily once-over with a brush, and many owners keep their dog in a short “puppy cut” to make life easier. (If you are setting yourself up, I put together a post on the grooming clippers and blades I use on our Shih Tzus.)

Are Shih Tzus hypoallergenic?

You will see Shih Tzus listed as a “hypoallergenic” breed all over the internet, and that needs an honest footnote: no dog is truly 100 percent hypoallergenic. The thing people are usually allergic to is not hair at all. It is a protein found in dander, saliva, and urine, and every dog produces it.

What is fair to say is that a low-shedding, hair-coated breed like the Shih Tzu often bothers allergy sufferers less, because all that loose, dander-carrying hair stays trapped in the coat and gets brushed out rather than floating around your home. Many people with mild allergies do fine with a Shih Tzu. But if someone in your house has serious allergies, do not take a website’s word for it. Spend real time around the breed first and see how they react.

Frequently asked questions

Do Shih Tzus shed a lot?

No. Shih Tzus have hair rather than fur and shed very little. The hair they do lose tends to stay caught in the coat, which is why regular brushing matters to prevent matting.

Are Shih Tzus good for people with allergies?

Often, yes, for people with mild allergies, because their low-shedding coat keeps dander from spreading. But no dog is fully hypoallergenic, so anyone with serious allergies should spend time around the breed before committing.

How often should you groom a Shih Tzu?

Brush daily if the coat is kept long, and plan on a bath every few weeks. Many owners keep a shorter puppy cut to make brushing and upkeep much easier.
