QUINT, the daily word game with a twist, spelled in glowing cyan and magenta tiles

I Built QUINT, a Free Daily Word Game With Twists the Big Ones Don’t Have

I’ve got another daily game to share, and this one is a word game. It’s called QUINT. Every day there’s one hidden five-letter word, the same one for everybody, and you get six guesses to find it. It’s free, it runs right in your browser, there are no ads, and you don’t need an account to play.

I know what you’re thinking. There are a lot of five-letter word games out there. I thought the same thing, so I didn’t want to build just another copy. I wanted to add the stuff I actually wished those games had, like a reason to play aggressively instead of safely, a harder puzzle on the weekend, and a way to play against my own family instead of strangers. So that’s what QUINT is.

How to Play QUINT

If you’ve played a daily word puzzle before, you’ll be comfortable in about ten seconds. Type any real five-letter word and hit Enter, and the tiles light up to tell you how close you are:

  • Electric cyan means the right letter in the right spot.
  • Hot magenta means the letter is in the word, just somewhere else.
  • Dark means that letter isn’t in the word at all.

A new puzzle drops every night at midnight Central time. When you finish, QUINT shows you the definition of the word (every single answer has one written for it), and you get a spoiler-free result grid you can paste into a text or Facebook. If the colors are hard for you to tell apart, there’s a high-contrast orange and blue mode in Settings, plus a Hard mode if you want to be forced to use every clue you’ve found.

The Live Wire: A Hidden Bonus Tile Every Day

This is the part I’m proudest of. Every day, one of the five letter positions is secretly charged. Nobody knows which one. To strike it, you have to lock the correct letter into that exact spot before your winning guess. Your winning row doesn’t count, because everybody gets that one for free.

That changes how you play. Instead of fishing for letters safely, there’s a real reward for going for it early. Hit the wire and the tile arcs with a ⚡, and the bolt shows up in your share grid so everyone can see you got it. If you miss, QUINT shows you where it was hiding when the game ends. And if you’re signed in, every five strikes earns you a Streak Freeze. The wire’s position is worked out on the server, so there’s no peeking at it.

The Weekend Glitch Protocol

On Saturdays and Sundays a second puzzle opens up, and it’s meaner. You get one word and seven guesses, but on every row that isn’t a win, one tile’s color comes back corrupted. It’s not a lie. That tile was scored honestly, you just don’t get to see the result, so you have to reason your way around the gap. Everyone gets the exact same corrupted tile on the exact same row, which makes it a lot of fun to compare notes with somebody afterward.

The Glitch Protocol is pure bonus. It never touches your daily stats or your streak, and your winning row always comes back clean. During the week it’s offline with a countdown to the next weekend.

Play Against Friends and Family: Duels and Leagues

You can make a duel link, send it to someone, and race each other on the same secret word, fewest guesses wins. Or start a private league with a six-letter invite code and compare everyone’s daily results all season long. My dad plays QUINT regularly, and a word game is a lot more fun when you can see how someone you know did on the same puzzle.

More Ways to Play

  • QUINT Quad: four hidden words at once on one shared keyboard, and nine guesses to clear all four boards.
  • Themed puzzle: a bonus word from a rotating daily category like Animals, Food, Music or Science. Knowing the theme changes how you open.
  • Archive: replay any past day you missed.
  • Practice mode: unlimited rounds that don’t touch your stats.

Streaks, Streak Freezes and Leaderboards

Solve day after day to build a streak. Every ten-day milestone banks a Streak Freeze (you can hold up to five), and a freeze automatically covers a day you miss, so one busy Tuesday doesn’t wipe out two months of work. You can also earn freezes from Live Wire strikes and by inviting friends. Freezes only protect your streak, they never buy you a spot on the leaderboard, so the competition stays fair.

There are daily, streak and all-time leaderboards, a play-history calendar, 17 achievements to collect, and optional daily reminders by email or phone notification. If you take a hint, your streak still counts, but that day comes off the public leaderboard.

Free, No Ads, and It Works on Your Phone

QUINT is completely free. No ads, no purchases, no subscription. You can play everything as a guest, and an account only exists so your streak follows you from your phone to your laptop. It works great on a phone and you can install it to your home screen like a real app. The answer is scored on the server and never sent to your browser, so nobody on the leaderboard is cheating by reading the page source.

Like all my games, I’ll keep tinkering with it. If you find a bug or a word that should count and doesn’t, leave a comment and I’ll fix it. Now go see if you can hit the wire.
