In Ashwood's own words

The sales letters

Ashwood didn't sell printing — it sold the idea that how your business looks on paper is how it looks, period. Two pieces of that pitch ran on ashwoodinc.com in 2003 and 2004. They're reproduced here exactly as written, smart quotes and all.

“Do You Really Want Your Company Image Portrayed By The Cheapest Print Shop?”

Because the quality of your printed materials says so much about you…

A roll of the dice
The original art that ran with this letter.

It's true. First impressions do matter. We know it's subjective, we know it shouldn't be such a big deal — but it is. We often make big decisions because of little things: the texture of the paper we're holding in our hands, the sheen on the brochure, the depth and vibrancy of the inks (after all, who wants murky ink?) and a host of other often subjective choices.

Of course the real challenge is trying to explain this to your printer when it comes time to print the new brochure. Can you imagine the conversation? Talk about awkward! Instead of focusing on the message — trying to make sure that the best image is presented — the conversation often revolves around the material choices.

“What weight of paper would you like, and what type of finish?” asks the printer. “What choices are there? And at what price?” you reply. Do you know the difference? Can you pick the right material based on the name alone? And so it goes on, making isolated decisions — one at a time.

Now imagine a better way. One where you don't have to guess about materials, where you don't need to know the difference between 80 lb and 20 lb paper stock, where you don't need to know the reflective qualities of the gloss and semi-gloss finish.

Imagine the printing company coming to you… when it's convenient for you. Imagine a discussion where you can explain your needs in “plain English,” not print-speak. Where you can say things like “I'd like my brochure to make an impression” — and we'll know what you mean.

We promise not to say things like “So you want it on 120 lb paper stock then?” because we know there's a good chance you'll resent being made to feel stupid if you don't know the answer.

We'll work with you to understand the underlying basic need behind your printing and we'll recommend solutions — not just products. For instance, we don't just do printing; we can also handle design, production and special mailing solutions such as folding.

A consultative approach to solving your printing needs may take a little more time in the beginning, and there may be cheaper print companies out there. However, we know that taking the extra time to understand your needs means superior service and superior results.

And as you know… “The quality of your printed materials says so much about you.”

Creating brochures and other collateral pieces was just one part of Ashwood's Marketing Services.

“ATTENTION: Local Businessman Finally Reveals The Secrets of How To ‘Print’ Money”

“The #1 problem faced by most small businesses today is lead generation — finding new business.”

The original “money man” photo wasn't saved by the archive — so here's a stand-in.

“The #1 problem faced by most small businesses today is lead generation, or finding new business. But approach the challenge in a certain way and you quite literally have the secrets behind how to print your own money!”

This bold claim was recently made during an interview with Mr. Dolan. His company, Ashwood Inc., provides a unique service in his industry — consultative problem resolution. Unlike many of his counterparts, Mr. Dolan and his staff approach the problem from the customer's perspective — essentially working to understand what “you” need, rather than expecting you to articulate what you think you need to fix your problem.

The process can be quite detailed, and Ashwood does not limit itself to simply rendering advice and solutions on printed materials — although that is the primary area of service. No, Ashwood's large network of suppliers and vendors means that Ashwood is uniquely positioned to connect the many pieces of the puzzle and find the perfect fit for you. Networking 101.

Along with this incredible network of resources comes the in-house expertise associated with graphical and printed design. Again, Ashwood excels here once more, because the staff have been trained to focus not just on the development of the solution, but the meaning and the message.

Take, for instance, your corporate brochure. If you allowed a typical print company to develop it, you might find your company name emblazoned across the top: great for your ego, but terrible for your sales. After all, your brochure is supposed to be a “leave-behind silent salesperson.” And “yelling” ABC Building Supplies does not give your prospect any compelling reason to open your brochure — let alone buy anything from your company.

Ashwood's integrated use of direct marketing in the development of your business solutions means they're always looking out for you, making your sales message as clear as possible. Each piece of material created quite literally becomes a 24/7 sales representative for your business, and with this kind of focus and full-time coverage, your business blossoms.

To find out how Ashwood can help you grow your business, call today. Jamie Dolan and his staff will be pleased to discuss a variety of solutions tailored to fit your needs and your budget.

Business development services included business consulting and planning, technology consulting, and finance. The Ashwood network was extensive.
