How to play, every game mode explained, and what makes QUINT different  ·  Last updated: June 11, 2026

QUINT is a free daily word game by Jamie Dolan. Guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries โ€” then go further: strike the daily Live Wire โšก, survive the weekend-only Glitch Protocol ๐ŸŒ€, race friends in duels, and protect your streak with banked freezes. No ads, no paywall, plays on phone and desktop, installs as an app.

The basics

Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter. The tiles light up in QUINT's color language:

C
M
D

You have six guesses. A brand-new puzzle drops every day at midnight (US Central), every answer comes with a dictionary definition when you finish, and your result grid is made to share:

โฌ›๐ŸŸชโฌ›โฌ›โฌ›
๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฆโฌ›โšกโฌ›
๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฆ

Prefer orange & blue? A high-contrast color mode is in Settings. There's also a Hard mode (revealed clues must be reused), free hints (using one keeps your streak but takes that day off the public leaderboard), a practice mode, and a full archive of past puzzles.

โšก The Live Wire โ€” QUINT's signature twist

EVERY DAY ยท BUILT INTO THE DAILY PUZZLE

Hidden under one of the five letter positions each day is a charged tile โ€” the Live Wire. Nobody knows where it is. To strike it, you must lock the correct letter onto that exact position before your winning guess โ€” solving the puzzle jumps right over it, so the wire only rewards bold early play.

Two achievements live here: Live Wire (first strike) and Conductor (ten strikes).

๐ŸŒ€ Glitch Protocol โ€” the weekend gauntlet

SATURDAY & SUNDAY ONLY

On weekends a second puzzle opens: one hidden word, seven guesses โ€” but the feedback itself is under attack. On every non-winning row, one tile's feedback comes back corrupted:

G
L
I
T
C

The flickering cell was scored honestly on the server, but its true color is withheld โ€” it might have been cyan, magenta, or dark, and you have to deduce around the gap. The corrupted column changes every row and is the same for every player, so everyone fights the exact same corruption. The extra seventh guess offsets the missing information.

On weekdays the protocol is offline, with a countdown to the next window.

More ways to play

QUINT Quad

Four hidden words at once, sharing one keyboard โ€” every guess scores on all four boards, and you have nine tries to clear them all. A fresh set daily. Play Quad →

Themed puzzle

A bonus word drawn from a rotating daily category โ€” Animals ๐Ÿพ, Food ๐ŸŽ, Music ๐ŸŽต, Science ๐Ÿ”ฌ, and eight more. Knowing the theme changes how you open. Play today's theme →

Duels & Leagues

Create a duel link and race a friend to the same secret word โ€” fewest guesses wins. Or start a private league with a 6-letter invite code and compare daily results with friends and family all season. Both live under the trophy icon in the game.

Archive & Practice

Replay any past day from the archive, or play unlimited practice rounds โ€” neither touches your stats. Both are in Settings โš™๏ธ.

Streaks, Freezes & the spark economy

Solve daily puzzles back-to-back to build a streak. Every 10-day milestone banks a Streak Freeze โ„๏ธ (up to 5) that automatically bridges a missed day. You can also earn freezes by striking Live Wires (5 strikes = 1 freeze) and by inviting friends. Freezes protect streaks โ€” they never buy leaderboard rank, so competition stays fair.

Leaderboards, heatmap & achievements

Daily, streak, and all-time public boards (verified accounts only), a personal play-history heatmap, and 17 achievements โ€” from Hole in One ๐ŸŽฐ to Conductor ๐Ÿ”Œ. Optional daily reminders by email or app notification so you never lose a streak by accident.

What makes QUINT different

Guess-the-word games are a classic puzzle genre โ€” what defines QUINT is everything built around and into that idea, all of it original to this game:

Originality & non-affiliation: QUINT is an original, independently created game designed, developed, and operated by Jamie Dolan. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to The New York Times Company, Wordle, or any other word game. QUINT uses its own name, artwork, color language, share-grid symbols, word list, game modes, and code.
