Friday afternoon was warm and wide open, so I did what I do with an afternoon like that. I got in the car and drove up to High Cliff. What started as a short walk turned into a slow loop around the east side of the valley, from the top of the escarpment down to…
The Fourth of July has looked about the same for me for as long as I can remember. Once it gets dark, you make your way down toward the water in Neenah, find a patch of grass, and wait for the first shell to go up over the harbor. I have been watching these fireworks…
A quiet July afternoon at Asylum Point in Oshkosh: a stone WPA lighthouse that was never lit, a calm view of Lake Winnebago, and wild black raspberries my dad found along the shore.
Is there anything more Wisconsin than that specific crunch of leaves under your boots in late October? I think not. Yesterday—Tuesday, October 29th—was one of those “gold-dipped” days. You know the kind I’m talking about. The sky over Lake Winnebago was that piercing, impossible blue, and the air had just enough of a bite to…
High Cliff State Park sits up on the limestone bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment, along the northeast shore of Lake Winnebago. On the evening of November 9th, 2022 I was up there on a crisp, clear fall day, standing by the Red Bird statue on the little stone overlook, watching the sun drop low over…
The little lighthouse at Kimberly Point is one of Neenah’s most photographed landmarks, and on the morning of August 2nd, 2020 I went down to take a few shots of my own. It stands right at the tip of Kimberly Point Park, where Lake Winnebago empties into the Fox River, and it’s been a local…
Another trip out to High Cliff State Park, this time on May 22nd, and the spring wildflowers were putting on a show. High Cliff sits on the northeast shore of Lake Winnebago, and the wooded trails along the bluff are one of our favorite places to wander this time of year. The trilliums were blooming…
A beautiful sunny day out sailing on Lake Winnebago on May 19th, 2016. This was John Rather’s J/22. John is a longtime member of the Neenah-Nodaway Yacht Club, the crew we did a lot of our sailing trips with, and on this day we had blue skies, puffy white clouds, and a steady breeze. About…
An evening up at High Cliff State Park on May 18th, 2016. You drive up the road to the upper part of the park, where the trails run right along the top of the bluffs, high above Lake Winnebago. The whole place was in full spring mode, with fresh green leaves just coming out and…
These are some of my favorite shots from an evening of sailboat racing out on Lake Winnebago, taken on June 17, 2014. The boats here are racing with the Neenah-Nodaway Yacht Club, which runs races right off Neenah all summer long. On a nice evening it’s a lot of fun to set up along the…
It was about 35 out this afternoon, clear and not very windy. Here in Wisconsin it is quite unusual for us not to have a good amount of snow by this time of year. We decided to take advantage of the nice weather and lack of snow. Karen and I headed to High Cliff State…
A beautiful sunset at High Cliff State Park, looking out over Lake Winnebago. The sky lit up in shades of pink and gold as the sun dropped toward the horizon. High Cliff is one of our favorite spots, and evenings like this are exactly why. There’s nothing quite like watching the sun set over the…
