Dark-sky & stars

    A quick glossary of light

    Golden hour

The warm, soft, low-contrast light just after sunrise and before sunset (sun roughly −4° to +6°). The most flattering light of the day.

    Blue hour

The cool, even glow before sunrise and after sunset (sun −6° to −4°). Beautiful for cityscapes and calm water.

Civil / nautical / astronomical twilight

The sky darkening in stages as the sun sinks to −6°, −12°, then −18°. Past −18° it's as dark as it gets.

    Sun direction

Where on the horizon the sun rises and sets — it swings north in summer and south in winter, which is why this matters for planning a shot.

All times and angles are computed from astronomical formulae entirely in your browser — no server, no API, nothing about your plans ever leaves this page. Times are shown in the selected place's local time zone.
